Napoleon's Final days

Quatrain 1/ 32 

 

La grand Empire sera tost translaté,

En lieu petit qui bien tost viendra croistre,

Lieu bien infime d’exigue Comté,

Ou au milieu viendra poser son Scepter.

 

The great Empire will soon be exchanged for a small place, 

which soon will begin to grow

A small place of tiny area 

in the middle of which he will come to lay down his sceptre.

the great empire will soon be exchanged for a small place: In  1814, Napoleon was forced to abdicate as Emperor of France and was exiled to the Island of Elba, just off the coast of Italy.

 

which will soon begin to grow: After three hundred days as Elba’s ruler, he escaped and returned to France.

 

a small place of tiny area: After the Battle of Waterloo, he abdicated as the Emperor of France for a second time, and the British transferred him under guard to a small island in the Atlantic called Saint Helena. 

 

in the middle of which he will come to lay down his sceptre: He died on Saint Helena in 1821. He was 51 years old at the time of his death.
